The thermocouple acts as a flame sensor for your appliance's pilot assembly. When the pilot light is lit, it heats the tip of the thermocouple, generating a small electrical current. This current signals the gas valve to stay open. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple cools down, cuts the current, and safely shuts off the gas supply to prevent dangerous gas leaks.
